31st 2002: Global Day of Action against a Corporate UN
On
August the 31st, people and organisations all over Europe and the
rest of the World will join in a Global Day of Action against the
corporate control of ourlives, the privatisation of sustainable
development and our common future. Demonstrations, parades, manifestations
and other kinds of actions will be held inseveral different countries
to expose how corporations are using the World Summiton Sustainable
Development to portray themselves as 'part of the solution and notthe
problem'. The protesters believe that corporations are in fact incapable
ofbeing committed to social and environmental change.
The
World Summit on Sustainable Development also known as Rio+10 takes
place from August 26 to September 4 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Big business will greenwash themselves by spreading disinformation
to present an environmentally friendly public image through powerful
public relations campaigns and partnerships with the UN and uncritical
NGOs.
Ten
years have passed since the last big conference in Rio de Janeiro
and not much has been achieved. Our climate is changing, our natural
environment is dying and poverty has increased. Meanwhile, corporations
have become bigger and more powerful, the WTO, the IMF and the World
Bank have tightened their grip on society, and environmental and
social conventions have proved useless in tackling what they set
out to do. Our governments pander to the whims of corporate lobby
groups whose neo-liberal agenda is slowly privatising everything
on our planet to the detriment of the many and to the benefit of
the few.
The
protesters want to make clear to the public that we will have to
work onsustainable development ourselves. The ten years since Rio
have shown that we should not rely on governments or corporations.
The solution is to take action against the polluters and to change
our own lives and neighbourhoods.
Demonstrations
will take place in several countries and the social movement in
South Africa, consisting of the indigenous peoples, the rural and
urban communities and other environmental and social grass roots
groups will be holding their big manifestation on the this day in
Johannesburg.
