The National Federation of Organic Farmers (FNAE) and the Information Centre on GMOs (InfOMG - Romania) announce the declaration of the first GMO Free Region in Romania. A number of 26 localities from the Bistrita Nasaud county, declared themselves as GMO Free Zones.

Kildare becomes Irelands 9th GMO-free zone

DUBLIN, 24 October 2006 – Kildare County Council became the ninth county on the island of Ireland to declare itself a GMO-free zone [1]. The decision was taken by the elected County Councillors at a meeting yesterday. The Motion states “that this County Council takes all possible measures necessary to promote and maintain Kildare as a genetically modified crop-free zone, in order to protect the interests of farmers and to encourage development of our valuable agricultural industry”. More GMO-Free Regions in Romania

14 new local authorities demand from the government the right to ban GMOs

A group of municipalities in the Cluj County – the so-called Huedin microregion - have declared themselves as a GMO-Free Zone. This makes it Romania’s second GMO-Free Region. The 14 localities followed the example of another GMO-Free Region established in the Bistrita Nasaud County in March 2006 (2 towns and 24 communes). Read more...  

Dutch GMO-Free Zones conference well attended

ImageAbout 60 persons attended the Dutch conference about GMO-free zones that took place in the venue Boerderij Mereveld in Utrecht on February 4. The event, organised by Greenpeace Netherlands, organic chain representative Biologica, and A SEED, informed about the opportunities and limitations for creating gmo-free zones in the Netherlands. Participants formed a varied group consisting of farmers, provincial politicans, policy makers, activists, and concerned citizens. Read more...

GMO-Free Zones

Regions in various European countries have declared themselves GMO-free. There are 260 in total now, and we're not talking about some small areas: Tuscany, the Basque Country, Poland, parts of France and Austria. In Germany farmers have united to create GMO-free zones of their joined land. More than 4500 European municipalities joined the movement. A complete list of all the regions is available on www.gmo-free-regions.org .

 

Obviously the Netherlands is way behind in all this. This is partially caused by Dutch agriculture being more intensified and focused on innovation and techno-fixes in comparison to many other regions. Farmers are less tied to their land and more used to follow the technological developements force-fed by agrobusiness. But another possible reason could be that the average Dutch citizen stands even further away from the country side and food production than other European citizens.
