(Dendermonde, 12th February 2013) - Today the court of Dendermonde convicted 11 activists of consipiracy. In doing so, the judge has criminalised their participation in the debate and the non violent direct action on 29th May 2011, which brought attention to the need for a sustainable agriculture system.

Genetically Modified potatoes are currently being field tested in the Netherlands by Wageninger University. The potatoes are being used a pro-GMO publicity stunt in an attempt to increase public approval of GMOs and reduce EU safety regulations. If successful, this could open the market to many kinds for GMO crops into our environment and onto our dinner tables. Take action in the legislative process of EU-Seed regulation!

The new regulation will de facto ban old and rare varieties and farmers varieties and threaten the exchange and selling of seeds of diversity.

DG SANCO (the General Direction of the EU for Sanitary and Consumer affairs) has been working on a proposal for a new regulation since years. On Monday, the 6th of May they will present their proposal to the conference of commissioners. They could not get a consensus of the two other affected DGs, DG AGRI (agricultural affairs) and DG ENVI (environmental affairs). Both opposed the last draft of the proposal, and DG SANCO is not looking for a consensus.
