On August 17th 2007 Movimento Verde Eufémia gathered in Herdade da Lameira, Silves, in the GM Free Region of the Algarve. In a symbolic but determined act they destroyed less than 1 hectare of the first field of gene tically modified corn in this GM Free Region. This case became a huge topic in Portugal, having severe repression by the media and authorities and government. More than two years of criminal investigations gone by, and now 3 activists will be taken to court in January 2010. They need your solidarity!
The activists publicly offered to recultivate the 51 hectares of transgenic corn with organic corn. The proposal was rejected by the owner, which continues to use GM corn.
The Portuguese pro-GMO government responded strongly, criminalizing anti-GMO activists of MVE and other organisations in an attempt to isolate them. This strategy came to the point of even officially labeling the action as a terrorist act. Some people that have been brought in relation to the case by the police are therefore facing the risk of prosecution. In general, it became harder to act against GMO in Portugal. Individuals or organisations who try, run a high risk of being under suspicion and surveillance by authorities.
The media criticism of the action was major and, rather than a focus on the issue of this political action, the media has put a focus on the criminality. Adjectives like ecoterrorists became common ground in the media reports that followed... untill today.
Support the prosecuted activists politically by signing the petition and financially by donating. More info on how to: http://solimove.liveinfo.nl/main_en
