The Soy Campaign
A SEED's soy campaign questions large scale soy production in South America and supports sustainable and local food production in Europe. The campaign has the following goals:
To inform the general public about the social and ecological effects of the massive soy production in Latin America; land conflicts, violence, rising pesticide use, GMOs, deforestation, erosion and loss of food sovereignty.
To link the issue with meat production and consumption in Europe; Most of the soy is used as animal feed in Europe (and China). This meat industry creates animal cruelty and pollution by over-fertilisation.
To stop the current certification processes; nature conservation organisations and some NGOs, together with companies, are creating criteria for so called 'responsible soy' that are unacceptable for local peasants and don't question the current export-volume neither the use of genetically manipulated seeds.
To give direct support to local initiatives that fight the soy expansion by giving international attention to their struggle, doing solidarity actions in Europe and raising money.
While the problems related to soy production are continuously increasing, a new campaign focus is taking shape: fuel and electricity produced from agriculture products. Recently the threat of climate change and the increasing scarcity of fossil fuels has sped up this alarming development.

Exchange of video letters between Paraguay, Germany and The Netherlands

In Paraguay, the Netherlands and Germany A SEED Europe is recording and showing video letters. In South America it is about the resistance against the production of soy and in the Europe the issue are the problems with the new mega pig-stables where the soy is used as feed. With project we want to exchange the experiences and ideas for alternatives between the many local citizen groups. (The rest of the text only exists in Dutch, but you can watch them here.)
Uitwisseling videoboodschappen tussen Paraguay, Nederland en Duitsland
Als onderdeel van een campagne om het verzet tegen het uitbreiden van sojavelden in Paraguay te verbinden aan het verzet tegen de megastallen en dierindustrie in Europa, heeft A SEED in samenwerking met La SojaMata een project opgezet waarbij videoboodschappen van direct betrokkenen worden uitgewisseld. In Paraguay vertelden inwoners van kleinschalige boerengemeeschappen die negatieve gevolgen van sojateelt ondervinden, hun verhaal, inclusief een boodschap aan boeren en consumenten in Europa. Aan bewonersorganisaties in Nederland en Duitsland die zich tegen megastallen verzetten, worden de booschappen vertoont en weer nieuwe videobrieven opgenomen. Elke betrokkene vertelt zijn of haar eigen verhaal en op deze manier passeren heel wat thema's en argumenten tegen grootschalige sojaproductie en varkensstallen, de revue. Via de brieven hopen we de vele mensen aan verschillende kanten van de soja-keten dichter bij elkaar te brengen. Verschillende organisaties kunnen zo mogelijks argumenten en alternatieven van elkaar overnemen om zo samen sterker te staan in de strijd tegen de agro-multinationals, sojaproducenten en grote varkenshouders.
Tijdens de 'varkens-tour' in Juni 2009 door Nederland en Duitsland worden zowel op straat als tijdens de informatie-avonden videoboodschappen vertoond. Uiteindelijk worden de Europese boodschappen ook weer in Paraguay vertoond. Je kunt het project natuurlijk ook hieronder online blijven volgen.
