A SEED's soy campaign questions large scale soy production in South America and supports sustainable and local food production in Europe. The campaign has the following goals:

To inform the general public about the social and ecological effects of the massive soy production in Latin America; land conflicts, violence, rising pesticide use, GMOs, deforestation, erosion and loss of food sovereignty.

To link the issue with meat production and consumption in Europe; Most of the soy is used as animal feed in Europe (and China). This meat industry creates animal cruelty and pollution by over-fertilisation.

To stop the current certification processes; nature conservation organisations and some NGOs, together with companies, are creating criteria for so called 'responsible soy' that are unacceptable for local peasants and don't question the current export-volume neither the use of genetically manipulated seeds.

To give direct support to local initiatives that fight the soy expansion by giving international attention to their struggle, doing solidarity actions in Europe and raising money.

While the problems related to soy production are continuously increasing, a new campaign focus is taking shape: fuel and electricity produced from agriculture products. Recently the threat of climate change and the increasing scarcity of fossil fuels has sped up this alarming development.

Already over 100 organisations and networks signed the statement!

On April 23-24 many companies involved in the large scale production and trade of soy will be meeting in the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires. Peasant movements and social and ecological groups have published a statement to expose that those companies are not the right ones to talk about so called 'responsible soy'. They are the core of the problem and not part of the solution.

A SEED Europe has often been publishing articles about the negative impact of soy-production. Our most used arguments in one line; Forest and savannah is transferred in to enormous monoculture soy-fields and peasants and indigenous people loose their land and livelihood, often in a violent way. While this bean is mainly produced for animal feed for the western meat consumption. Recently a new dangerous market appears; agrofuels. Although almost everybody agrees that it is not

efficient to use soy for this, the large main producers and governments in producing countries have another opinion.

The main companies involved in the production, transport, trade and processing of the soy have read all the critics on the large scale production of this crop as well. They see the danger of a bad reputation and protest on the fields and are now trying to do something to improve their image and secure they business. This is not unexpected. What is more surprising is the behaviour of some big development and nature conservation organisations like Solidaridad and World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The last one is the initiator of the RoundTable on Responsible Soy. a series of meetings with participants of some western NGOs and most companies involved in the soy business. This is supposed to result in some voluntary production criteria. From the beginning it has been clear that the volume of the soy production would not be criticised nor limited. Where as the occupation of so many square kilometres by soy is one of the main aspects causing the problems.

And there are more major problems which will most likely not be solved by the criteria. From the beginning companies have been using this process to improve their image: “See how we are working on a responsible production!”. This is called Greenwashing. In the meantime this process is stopping any real, binding regulation that can hurt the companies. For this reason almost all organisations of peasants in the soy-producing countries have refused to become part of this show.

A third international round-table meeting will take place on April 23-24 2008 in Buenos Aires. In Argentina, possibly the country were the peasants and other poor people suffered most from land conflicts, pesticide use and the disappearance of a local and diverse food production. So for sure also this time there will be prostest in front of the conference centre.
As the start of the protests several organisation from Latin America and Europe took the initiative to write a statement that explains the arguments against this 3rd Roundtable on 'Responsible Soy' (RTRS) and firmly rejects this process.
The goal is that as many as possible organisations sign the statement before April 20, two days before the roundtable starts in Buenos Aires.

We are confident that this letter will influence policy makers, consumers and public opinion around the world. Statement – March 2008

For the third time we reject the fallacy of responsible soy social justice, indigenous and rural organisations and urban movements of Argentina, Latin America and other continents reject the 'Third Roundtable on Responsible Soy' to be held on April 23 and 24 at the Hilton Hotel, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Agribusiness is responsible for the devastation of our soils, deforestation, contamination of rivers and aquifers, biodiversity loss, and the plunder of the natural and cultural heritage which once supported our communities. The expansion of soy-bean monoculture threatens the territorial, cultural and food sovereignty of countries as well as the rights of the Indigenous and rural communities. Soy agribusiness excludes, impoverishes and weakens the population. This industrial agricultural model violates economic, social, cultural and environmental rights and, as it expands, its destructive methods of operation wipe out everything in its path, resulting in rural migration, marginalisation of rural populations, and ultimately the criminalisation of the poor and social movements.

In spite of this, the soy agroindustry is actually expanding and becoming stronger through the growing markets for processed foods, industrial livestock farming, and the production of agrofuel crops that will purportedly ‘save us from climate change’. The reality is that the hidrovias (waterways) which are part of IIRSA (1) are expanding, new rail networks are appearing, more GM crops are being grown and more pesticides and machinery is being imported to speed up the land clearing process.

Agribusiness expands more and more, and many European Governments respond to criticisms and complaints about the current situation in our countries by blindly and naively trusting World Wildlife Funds Round Tables for Sustainable Business. We are dismayed that they are following it as being successful examples, specifically towards the creation of new legal criteria for the sustainable production of biofuels (2). By doing this the EU Governments will fall into the trap of corporate greenwashing.

Social movements from the North and the South reject outright all attempts by corporations and NGOs to mobilize public opinion in support of their notion of sustainable or responsible GM soy monoculture (3). We disapprove of the projects of corporate social responsibility (CSR) that, through roundtable dialogues and voluntary measures, attempt to cover up the crimes committed by the corporations. Through CSR, corporations try to usurp the State and create private social policy making.

We resist the agribusiness model of neo-colonial domination and the way in which corporations systematically misrepresent distort many of our own social movement discourses and statements. We denounce the corporate greenwashing of the niche market of certification.

In March 2005, rural and environmental organisations from the Southern Cone, including Via Campesina from Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil came together at Foz de Iguazu to denounce the First Roundtable on Responsible Soy (4). Simultaneously, Dutch activists demonstrated outside the headquarters of the fodder industry PROVIMI in the harbour of Rotterdam (5). In 2006, the Paraguayan social movements, urban and rural organisations, demonstrated against the Second Roundtable on Sustainable Soy which took place in Asunción. Recently Via Campesina Paraguay rejected publicly an attempt to involve them without their consent in the greenwash of Responsible Soy (6).

Due to all that is stated above, we reject once again the corporate project led by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and including the soy agribusiness groups AAPRESID (7) from Argentina, ABIOVE (8), MAGGI and APROSOJA from Brazil, DAP from Paraguay, Bunge and Cargill from the United States, the ABN-AMRO Bank from The Netherlands, and the NGOs, FUNDAPAZ from Argentina, GUYRA (Birdlife) from Paraguay, Solidaridad from The Netherlands, amongst others.

We ratify once again our commitment to a united struggle for the Food Sovereignty of our people and to confront any attempted misinformation and seducement from the agribusiness. We demand the liberation of our territories from these criminal agribusiness companies and justice for all the victims of soy agribusiness!

Where there are monocultures there can’t be sustainability!
