The GMO Campaign

A SEED wants a GMO free agriculture and food chain. We reject any form of genetic manipulation in consumption goods. The GMO campaign aims at raising awareness about the issue by spreading information and doing public actions. We are also working on creating gmo free zones in the Netherlands.

DVD 'The Farmer and the Gene' available

The film and debate tour around the new documentary “The Farmer and the Gene. But is the attraction mutual?” finished, but there are still some screenings planned. And finally also the dvd of the documentary is available! The film is in spoken Dutch with a choice for English subtitles.

In addition to the documentary a reader with background information (in dutch) can be downloaded.

The DVD has two versions of the documentary on it: Dutch spoken without subtitles, and Dutch spoken with English subtitles.

The movie
The Dutch government is exploring the opportunities of genetic manipulation in agriculture. It seems the right way to go in a country which relies on such an industrialized farming system. But are genetically modified crops the right answer to certain agricultural problems in The Netherlands? Are farmers willing to use them? Starting from the questions they raise and using Dutch developments as examples, the documentary explores different aspects related to genetic engineering in agriculture: presence along the food chain, freedom of choice for farmers and consumers, coexistence of GM and non-GM cultivation, environmental and economical effects, the contradictions of different agricultural systems. Can the different approaches on food production peacefully exist next to each other or are they incompatible in a small country as the Netherlands? Pointing out those facts, “The Farmer and the Gene” set a good start for discussion.

The makers
'The Gene and the Farmer' (Dumitriu/Verbeek, 2008, the Netherlands) is a co-production of A SEED Europe and Milieudefensie. A SEED Europe is an international
action group that carries on campaigns for environmental and social justice by direct cooperation with base organisations around the world. The film forms part of the GMO campaign. The goal of the campaign is to inform the consumer and producer by info-nights and actions on the genetic engineering and stimulate opinion making. More on, A SEED promotes GMO free zones in the Netherlands.
Milieudefensie is a movement of people that are working locally, nationally and worldwide to solve and prevent environmental problems.
