public distrust towards genetic engineering, particularly in the
food chain, the Dutch government continues to support a business
that has shown little, if no return on the massive investments it
has received. The Genomics meeting, a project conceived by the Dutch
biotech industry and the government to promote the use of genetics
research, was set up mainly as a networking event between companies
and venture capitalists. In the presentations given, one thing was
made clear: one can only successfully start up a company if one
can be able to protect the future product, if one can patent it.
Venture capitalists said clearly that they will only fund research
where intellectual property (IP) can be "secured".

Genomics is a cooperation between companies and scients set up by the Dutch authorities to present the development of genome projects and genomic applications like genetic engineering in the Netherlands. Critical organisations were supposed to take part in the Genomics project when in started, but in fact they were never really involved. About 300 million Euro state money are channel through to the private sector without any support from the general public or any controll on what is wanted by the society. The meeting on 27 November will focus on the private sector and new investors. We are convinced that our food has to stay GE free, and the controll of the private sctor on food production needs to be stopped. We also want to make clear to the investors that the financial risks are too high, and that there is no moeny to be earnt from GE food. During all the time that GE has been applied in Europe now, not one product actually made winst. En with the opposition of European consumers and shopkeepers this is unlikely to change. Because there will be no critical debate during the congress itself, a public non-commercial masterclass of GE will take palce in a tent in front of the building. bij de Genomics bijeenkomst in Amsterdam Op 27 november vindt in Amsterdam het jaarlijkse congres van Genomics plaats. Dit door de overheid gestarte samenwerkingssverband van bedrijfsleven en wetenschappers presenteert de voortgang van lopende projecten die onderzoek naar het genoom, inclusief toepassingen als genetische manipulatie, in Nederland bevorderen. Ondanks dat er bij de start van het Genomics project is afgesproken dat kritische maatschappelijke organisaties bij het proces zouden worden betrokken is dit echter nooit gebeurd. Zonder enig maatschappelijk draagvlak en controle over de wenselijkheid wordt 300 miljoen aan overheidsgeld doorgesluisd naar het bedrijfsleven. De bijeenkomst op 27 september zal ook vooral in het teken staan van het bedrijfsleven en nieuwe investeerders. Wij zijn echter van mening dat ons voedsel gentech vrij moet blijven en dat de macht van het bedrijfsleven over ons voedsel moet worden ingedamd. Hiernaast willen we de aanwezige investeerders duidelijk maken dat de financiële risico's veel te groot zijn en dat er met gentech-voedsel helemaal niets valt te verdienen. Zolang men in Europa met genetische manipulatie bezig is heeft nog geen product winst gemaakt. En gezien de weerstand van de Europese consument en winkeliers zal dit ook niet gaan geburen. Tijdens de aanvang van het congres zullen we de deelnemers en het passerende publiek nog eens duidelijk maken wat er mis is met het investeren in gentech. Met deze feiten in het achterhoofd zullen ze de verkoop praatjes de rest van de dag toch iets anders aanhoren. En omdat het kritische debat binnen volkomen ontbreekt zal tijdens de lunchpauze in een tent voor de beurs een openbare commercie-vrije masterclass plaatsvinden over het nut van genetische manipulatie.
